By road and ferry, Coel Na Mara is less than 2½ hours from Sumburgh
Airport and 1½ hours from Lerwick and most parts of Shetland
can be explored in a day trip from the house.
Thanks to modern roads and vehicle ferries, travel between the islands is easy, inexpensive and convenient. Services from Yell to the Shetland Mainland (15 minutes crossing) and Unst (10 minutes crossing) operate approximately half hourly from early morning to late evening. Services to Fetlar (25 minutes crossing) are less frequent.
Vehicle booking is not essential on any of the routes but is recommended at peak times and during the summer tourist season. A return fare is payable on the Mainland – Yell leg of the journey but there are no fares for travel between Yell, Unst and Fetlar.
By far the best way of getting around is by your own private transport but daily bus services link Sumburgh and Lerwick and Lerwick and Toft, the Ferry Terminal for Yell on the Mainland. There are some onward connections within Yell.
For information on bus and ferry services, visit the transport page of Shetland Islands Council’s website – www.shetland.gov.uk/transport - or to enquire about ferry services or make a booking contact the booking office on 01957 722259.
