Getting here

By road and ferry, Coel Na Mara is less than 2½ hours from Sumburgh Airport and 1½ hours from Lerwick.  Most parts of Shetland can be explored in a day trip from the house.

Thanks to modern roads and vehicle ferries, travel between the islands is easy, inexpensive and convenient. Services from Yell to the Shetland Mainland (15 minute crossing) and Unst (10 minute crossing) operate approximately half hourly from early morning to late evening. Services to Fetlar (25 minute crossing) are less frequent.

Vehicle booking is not essential on any of the routes but is recommended at peak times and at weekends.

By far the best way of getting around is by your own private transport but daily bus services link Sumburgh and Lerwick and Lerwick and Toft, the Ferry Terminal for Yell on the Mainland. There are some onward connections within Yell.

See travel.shetland.org for ferry and bus timetables.

The Ferry Terminal for Yell is at Toft, 28 miles north of Lerwick along the A970 and A968. On disembarking the ferry at Ulsta, follow the A968 northwards for around 9 miles until you get to the Mid Yell junction. Arriving in Mid Yell around a mile further on, turn left at the junction and continue down through the village turn left at the junction signposted for Linkshouse Pier. Passing the pier and beach, Coel Na Mara is located about 50 metres up on the hillside to the right.
